Why you should change/upgrade your old fuse board to the latest 18th edition amendment 2 RCBO consumer unit.
There are 2 types of Domestic consumer units to choose from, also there are other opponents to consider, i.e. SPD and AFDD.
1- RCBO: this board has individual RCBOs Which means they have separate RCD protection for each MCB, this type of installation is the best option as this gives you protection for each circuit independently without any nuisance tripping of other circuits if there is a fault. this installation is slightly more expensive, but the advantages outweigh the cost.
2 – Dual RCD protected board also protects all circuits but this board only has 2 RCDs instead of each individual circuit, so if a circuit on one of the RCDs develops a fault, then all circuits on that RCD will disconnect.
3 – SPD surge protector is a new amendment to the bs7671 which requires one to be installed in certain properties, this can be omitted by the customer on domestic houses if they chose to, but we advise to install one to protect all their appliances throughout the property.
4 – AFDD: This device is now mandatory in HMO properties and properties like nursing homes, hospitals, offices, and commercial properties. By early detecting arc faults and disconnecting the affected circuit the AFDD with integrated miniature circuit breaker (MCB) offers reliable and complete protection in any type of building.
